Homestead Skills: Plant Three!
This spring and early summer, we’ve had a lot of wins and losses. We have more tomato seedlings than we know what to do with, but we’ve also had many plants destroyed by slugs, disease, and this one marauding squirrel that digs up every seedling tray.
This reminds me of something my family would say when I was working ing the garden as a child.
“Plant three if you want one.”
“That gives you one for deer to eat, one for the bugs to eat, and one for the table.”
The idea of redundancy should surprise anyone doing survival, self-reliance or homesteading - and it makes me immediately think of the adage “one is none.” (if you know, you know).
If you sow three times as much as you think you’ll need, it’s sill not a guarantee of abundance. However, it’s a better shot at abundance than doing the bare minimum. And if anyone could use some tomato seedings, hit me up.
